Society of Merchant Venturers

The Society of Merchant Venturers is a charitable organisation in the English city of Bristol.

The society can be traced back to a 13th-century guild which funded the voyage of John Cabot to Canada. In 1552, it gained a monopoly on sea trading from Bristol from its first royal charter. For centuries it had almost been synonymous with the government of Bristol, especially Bristol Harbour. In recent times, the society's activities have centred on charitable agendas.

The society played a part in the development of Bristol, including the building of Clifton Suspension Bridge and the Great Western Railway. It also influenced the development of educational institutions in Greater Bristol, including University of Bristol, University of the West of England, University of Bath, City of Bristol College, Merchants' Academy, Montpelier High School and Wells Cathedral School.

Παραδείγματα από το σώμα κειμένου για VENTURERS
1. He attended Merchant Venturers School and read English and philosophy at the University of Bristol.
2. The ice pack gripped the vessels of early venturers, holding fast for a year, and now offers the Amundsen its toughest challenge.
3. The pretty courtyard housing the Merchant Venturers‘ Almshouse harks back to the powerful 18th–century pro–slavery lobby, while the bells of Bristol‘s loveliest church, St Mary Redcliffe, were triumphantly set ringing when William Wilberforce‘s Bill to abolish slavery was defeated in 17'1.
4. "Indeed an ever increasing number of 50–55 year olds are ‘ski–ing‘ – spending the kids inheritance – and becoming so–called ‘Denture Venturers‘." The British gap year travel market comprises approximately 1% of all UK outbound trips and around 10% of outbound travel expenditure.
5. Consider the latest players in Bristol‘s school system: the Society Of Merchant Venturers, a quasi–Masonic organisation that refuses to release details of its membership but is almost exclusively male and – strangely, given the make–up of its home city completely white.
